Portrait of a photographer

Portrait of a Photographer

Photographers are perhaps one of hardest subjects to photograph perhaps because they themselves have an understanding of the art. Combine that with photographing one that is a close friend of yours and well… that makes for quite a challenge 🙂

Portrait of a photographer

The photos were taken at an old cement works near Warkworth, New Zealand About an hours drive north of Auckland. The old ruins offered a unique backdrop for the photos while the soft lighting added a natural feel to the photos that can often be lost.

The result was the unique portrait of a photographer.

Floating on the ropes by j-Photography

This portrait is all about serenity. And about trust. The studio setup was reasonably complex and model’s safety was a paramount. She is, actually, floating on those three ropes and there i no trickery or photoshop involved.

This kind of photography is my favourite: Slightly abstract yet featuring a person and a clear emotion.

Beautiful Young Family

A beautiful young family visited my studio for a photography session. They wanted me to focus mostly on their young daughter but also to capture a few family group photographs.  It was smiles all around and that made for a relaxed atmoshpehere and equally relaxed subjects. It did not take long before we were right into it and started taking some nice portraits.

She is a little princess, there is no doubt about that. Camera loves her and she loves the camera, a winning combination! I used an very old rocking chair that worked really well with her dress and she is very relaxed and most natural in it.

She is not quite ready yet to jump into her mum’s heels but it probably won’t be too long before that happens. 🙂 Still some growing to do…

Well, this almost looks like she is dancing. Lovely dress works well with the somewhat low-key nature of this portrait.

What a fantastic family! I sincerely hope to see them again soon and see if those heels will do the trick then.

Elegance

There are very few things as elegant and as passionate as Latino dancers. Particularly really good ones such as this fantastic pair.

Even in the controlled environment of a photography studio, photographing them was not a simple and easy undertaking. It was couple of hours of hard work for all of us but in the end I do believe it really payed off.

Fluid and beautiful dance offers many photographic opportunities and each movement is a piece of art in itself. Combine that with beautiful, elegant costumes and you have a real treat playing out right in front of your lens. It was almost an overwhelming visual experience of movement and beauty.

Countless hours of training…  total determination…  perseverance…

These are the keys key to their success.

I can relate to this as well as I am aware of all the hard work that I myself have put into my professional photography and I  hope it shows in the photos.

This award-winning couple has already set their sights beyond New Zealand and there is no stopping them! Last time I checked, they were throttling the globe in their conquest of the dance stages following a win at a major New Zealand competition.

People beware, these two will dance right into your hearts!

This is the kind of photography that I really enjoy as it is both meaningful, full of emotion and captures truly awesome people doing what they love to do.

I hope to see these guys again some time soon so that we can push my photography way outside of my zone of comfort and capture something truly unique again.

The Moment

This was a photo shoot for an upcoming real-estate agent with the purpose to create a number of head and upper body shots that can be used for real-estate agent marketing materials (business cards, brochures, company website etc).

The photoshoot was all about simplicity, clear posing, inviting smiles and everything that good marketing material requires.

Even though these photos might appear as relatively simple, they need to be carefully posed in order to achieve warmth and yet to keep a clean and professional look.

The studio really was ideal for this photoshoot. It allowed optimal lighting control for the photoshoot along with ample space for posing.

My personal preference is to utilise natural light whenever possible as the soft shadows it produces lead to a much more natural looking subject.

I am lucky enough that my North Shore photography studio has large window that let in enough natural light so that I usually have an option of choosing natural light over artificially created light.

The look achieved in these photos is not at all different to any executive or corporate photoshoots as essentially they want to capture the same thing: A clean, professional look.

The final output of this photoshoot included a series of colour images, black and white images as well as images with transparent backgrounds that are particularly suitable for marketing materials such as posters and brochures.

But this story does not end here…  The real estate agent was accompanied by her husband for this photoshoot so I spotted an opportunity to capture a loving couple portrait as the chemistry and love between them was truly palpable.

However, I very much prefer to photograph spontaneous moments rather than strictly posed ones as it results in photos that truly capture the beautiful and sincere emotions unachievable through posing.

I therefore asked them to simply stand close to each other whilst I “adjust my camera” (The camera needed no adjustment and even if it did I can adjust most settings on it without ever loosing sight of my subjects through the camera viewfinder) full well knowing that they cannot simply stand next to each other for long before “a moment happens” 🙂

And here it is:

Portrait Behind The Rain Drops by j-Photography

Behind The Rain Drops

There is something special in water reflections, whether you are trying to create something abstract or to make a portrait really unique and very special.

I really love to photograph people and to try create / capture something special. The  Photo-shoot might be in my North Shore photography studio or any other indoor or outdoor location around Auckland.

This, however, pushed my photography skills right up to the edge because I wanted to create something special based off an old portrait and not the person itself. To me it  symbolises an everlasting relationship with a special person. Jumping into PhotoShop and simply manipulating an old photo was not an option.

This is the outcome:  A Portrait of my father who passed away 25 years ago.  He is still out there, looking after me, behind the rain drops.

This image was captured using his old photo with setup in my studio. These are indeed real water drops and not a PhotoShop manipulation.

When I finished capturing that special memento, I wanted to explore other possibilities and capture the conflict of water and fire in a similar fashion.

The second photo is much more abstract, capturing the colour and warmth of the fire through the chill of the clear water:
